WHAT IS THE COLON?
The colon, or large intestine, is the end portion of the human digestive tract (food carrying passageway extending from the mouth to the anus). The intestines are long, hollow tubes that run from your stomach to your anal opening. There are two intestines: the small intestine and the large intestine. The small intestine is about 25 feet long. It is about as big around as your middle finger. The small intestine empties into the large intestine, also called the colon, which is about 5 to 7 feet long. The main function of the colon is to absorb water from the end products of digestion, as it leaves the small intestine, while forming solid waste products, or stool. Muscle contractions in the colon push the stool toward the rectum. By the time stool reaches the rectum, it is solid because most of the water has been absorbed. The length of time for digestion of a meal to the elimination of waste varies from person to person, however, on the average, this process generally takes place over the course of a 24 hour day.
WHY SHOULD I BE CONCERNED ABOUT MY COLON?
Good health revolves around the digestive system of which the colon plays a vital role. The colon is sometimes referred to as the sewage system of the body; it is the place where undigested food and waste material prepare for elimination. Similar to the sewage system in our environment if the colon lacks proper care and attention there may be a decline in health and illnesses may arise, manifesting itself in the form of diarrhea, constipation, bloating and cramps just to name a few. Add to that today’s fast paced lifestyles, fast-food restaurants and stress, along with an insufficient amount of water and fiber intake, and it is easy to see how overall health and well-being can be at risk.
WHAT IS COLON HYDROTHERAPY?
Colon Hydrotherapy is the safe, gentle infusion of purified, filtered water into the large intestine through the anus. Because only water is utilized, there are no dangerous or harmful chemicals or drugs introduced into the body at any time. It is encouraged that the client empty their bladder and bowel before the therapy session, in order to promote more comfort. The client then lies down on a massage-type table, covered with a towel or blanket. The client then is instructed in how to insert the small plastic speculum tube (approximately the size of a cigar) about two inches into the rectum. The tubing and speculum pack is completely sterile and disposable, eliminating any possibility of cross-contamination to ensure client safety. The plastic tubing then carries clean water in and waste out in a sterile, closed system, completely eliminating any mess or odor. When waste is being eliminated from the body, the therapist will gently massage the abdominal area to facilitate the release. The average appointment time is 60 minutes, with the procedure lasting approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
The equipment used is FDA registered, and is state-of-the-art, always with hygiene and safety as the main concern. It is equipped with multiple features which assure the safety of our clients, so that they may feel confident and comfortable about their sessions. The unit is self-sterilized and disinfected completely after each client use, using powerful sterilizing agents. All of these are then completely flushed from the system to ensure that they are completely dissipated before client use.
HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?
Since many clients have had decades of unsound eating and health practices when beginning colon hydrotherapy, most of the time, one session will not be enough to provide the desired results. Often a series of 4 or more are suggested when beginning a colon detoxification program, but as always, this is determined on a case by case basis considering individual needs and concerns.
WHAT SHOULD I DO BEFORE A COLON HYDROTHERAPY SESSION?
For 24 hours before your appointment, it is a good idea to avoid gas producing foods, such as broccoli, cabbage, etc., which might increase the amount of gas in your colon at the time of your appointment. Eating fresh, organic fruits, vegetables, grains and lean proteins along with lots of fresh water are good choices. Stay away from fast foods, fried foods, chocolate or caffeinated products, as well as alcohol. Wheat products and sugar should also be eliminated. Avoiding a large meal up to 3 to 4 hours before your appointment will enhance the comfort of your session. As always, follow your doctor’s instructions if you are on any type of special diet.
HOW WILL I FEEL AFTER A SESSION?
Most clients report feeling ‘lighter’ after a colon hydrotherapy session. Many notice increased energy levels, while a few, usually right after a session, may feel somewhat fatigued. It is possible that the client may not have a bowel movement for one or even two days after a session, however, many report a bowel movement the next day.
